Ag ceiliúradh Seachtain na Gaeilge le ‘Song of Granite’

Tá ríméad ar Cheantar Scannán UNESCO na Gaillimhe SONG OF GRANITE a thaispeáint, chun ceiliúradh a dhéanamh ar Sheachtain na Gaeilge. Arna stiúradh ag Pat Collins, scannanóir Éireannach a bhfuil an-aird air, is scannán é SONG OF GRANITE a chuireann saol an amhránaí sean-nós mór le rá Joe Heaney i láthair. Ba é Joe Heaney duine de laochra na hamhránaíochta traidisiúnta Gaelaí, agus ba dhuine diamhair agus cumasach é. Rugadh i gConamara i 1919 é, agus múnlaíodh é de réir na miotas, an cheoil agus na n-amhrán a bhí mar chuid lárnach dá thógáil. Ón am ar cailleadh é in Seattle i mí Bealtaine 1984, bhí gáir mhór leis ar fud an domhain mar dhuine de na pearsana ba thábhachtaí i gceol traidisiúnta na hÉireann. Bhí tionchar ollmhór ag an raith a bhí aige mar amhranaí cáiliúil ar a shaol phearsanta, áfach. Roghnaíodh an scannán mar iontráil oifigiúil na hÉireann sa chatagóir Scannán i dTeanga Iasachta do na Oscars 2018.

To celebrate Seachtain na Gaeilge, Galway UNESCO City of Film is delighted to screen SONG OF GRANITE. Directed by acclaimed Irish filmmaker Pat Collins, SONG OF GRANITE presents the life story of legendary seannós singer Joe Heaney. Joe Heaney was one of the greats of traditional Irish singing. Born in Connemara in 1919, he was shaped by the myths, music, and songs of his upbringing. By the time of his death in Seattle in May 1984, he was internationally acclaimed as one of the most important figures in Irish traditional music though his life as a gifted artist came at a personal cost. The film was selected as Ireland’s official submission for the Foreign Language Film Oscars 2018.

Percy French ar ais i nGaillimh / Percy French returns to Galway

It would be very unusual to have a sing-song anywhere in Ireland without hearing at least one Percy French song, ‘The Mountains of Mourne’, ‘Come back Paddy Reilly’ or ‘Phil the Fluthers Ball’ being the more popular. Many people may not know the composer of the songs but the lyrics and melodies are easily recognisable.

The County Leitrim Percy French Society was set up by Tish Dunleavy and Frank Cadam because they realised that Percy French was an under-promoted Irish composer. The Society’s objective is to bring Percy’s works to a wider audience and to create a better awareness of this great Irish genius. The shows are presented in a first stage interpretation where Frank Cadam takes the part of Percy French. There are ten performers in the show and all dress in period costume. Percy links the songs with his own story and explains where he got his inspiration for his works.

Tish Dunleavy, Musical Director and founder is very excited about presenting the show in An Taibhdhearc. “We have staged our Percy show in many theatres all over Ireland, including the National Concert Hall Dublin, but coming to Galway and in particular An Taibhdhearc is very exciting and special to me. I am really looking forward to our performance on Saturday 3rd March.

The shows are staged in a good humoured and fun loving way and audience participation is always encouraged. The programme includes all the well known songs such as ‘Phil the fluther’s ball’, Eileen Óg’, ‘The Mountains of Mourne’, ‘Abdul Abul Bul’, ‘Gortnamona’ and of course ‘The Emigrants letter / Cutting the Corn in Creeslough’ plus many many more well known pieces.

Tickets priced at €14 and €16 are available to purchase from An Taibhdhearc on Box Office on 091-562024 or online at http://bit.ly/2H8s8M3

Déanann Róisín Sheehy iarracht ar athcheangail a chothú le foraoiseacha na hÉireann sa rince seo, atá ina fhreagra ar an easpa baint a bhíonn againn lenár gcoillte dúchasacha. Déanann sí iniúchadh ar thionchor na staire daonna a d’fhág tírdhreachanna loma ina diaidh, go háirithe in iarthar na tíre. Éiríonn gluaiseachtaí an phíosa as cosán an aifrinn, na crainn agus an storas uisce ag Carraig an Bhruinteora, Co Phort Láirge. Tá an rince tionlactha le taifid de
amhrán nua chumtha ‘Adhmad inniu is an choill go buan’ leis an scríbhneoir agus fonnadóir Eoghan Ó Néill, scéalta Rita Power a tógadh in aice Carraig an Bhruinteora agus an polka ‘Trasna an Bhóthair’ le Paddy Cronin agus á sheinnt ag Liam Ó Connor.

Róisín Sheehy attempts to re-connect with Ireland’s forests in a dance conceived as a responce to the lack of contact we have with native woodland. She explores the impact of human history as bare landscapes have been left behind, espechially in Ireland’s west. The movement is a reflection of the mass path, trees and reservoir at Carrigavantry in Waterford. The dance is accompanied with recordings of a new song; ‘Adhmad inniu agus an Choill go buan’ by songwriter and singer Eoghan Ó Néill, the stories of Rita Power who grew up near Carrigavantry and the polka, ‘Trasna an Bhóthair’ by Paddy Cronin and played by Liam O Connor.
