STAR OF THE SEA
(Réalt na Mara)

BUNAITHE AR AN ÚRSCÉAL LE JOSEPH O’CONNOR
Cruthaithe ag MOONFISH THEATRE

Á léiriú mar chuid de Fhéile Ealaíne Idirnáisiúnta na Gaillimhe, Iúil 2014

Suite i gConamara, i Londain agus ar long an Ghorta Mhóir, pléann Star of the Sea ceisteanna teanga, talún agus cultúir.

Seo scéal grá agus díoltais ar bhord na loinge ‘Star of the Sea’, a bhfuil a bealach á déanamh aici chuig Nua-Eabhrac sa bhliain 1847 le linn an Ghorta Mhóir.

I measc na bpaisnéirí, tá Mary Duane, cailín aimsire, Lord Merridith, tiarna talún atá i ngrá léi, agus Pius Mulvey, dúnmharthóir atá ag iarraidh Lord Merridith a mharú.

Scéal faoi phaisean agus faoi thinneas, le téamaí agus nithe go leor eile cosúil le tréigean, bréaga, bochtaineacht agus bás. Tá sé bunaithe ar úrscéal Joseph O’Connor, a bhfuil clú agus cáil bainte amach go hidirnáisiúnta aige le deich mbliana anuas.

Is mór an onóir don Taibhdhearc an scéal mór seo, a phléann ceisteanna teanga, talún agus cultúir a chur ar stáitse i gcomhpháirt le Moonfish Theatre.

Beidh an dráma léirithe le meascán Gaeilge agus Béarla agus mar sin beidh sé oiriúnach do chách, pé cumas Ghaeilge atá acu.

Dráma cumhachtach, fuinniúil agus spreagúil – ná caill é!

Is dírithe ar dhaoine fásta amháin atá an léiriú seo agus tá sé feiliúnach d’aon duine atá os cionn 16 bliana d’aois.

“I am going to America shortly and will never come home again, so I want to say what follows and hope ye and yeer men act on it”

Award-winning, Moonfish Theatre Company, announce their latest production Star of the Sea, a theatrical reimagining of Irish writer Joseph O’Connor’s best-selling historical novel. This international number one selling book, set against the backdrop of the Irish famine comes to life as part of Galway Arts Festival 2014. A co-production with An Taibhdhearc, the play runs at the Galway venue from July 10 until July 19.

Star of the Sea is a sweeping story, set during the Famine, that moves between the wild landscape of Connemara, Co. Galway and the claustrophobic confines of a famine ship – the Star of the Sea. It is this ship that sets sail for the promised land and makes the journey from Ireland to New York, in 1847. Among the passengers are maidservant Mary Duane, the ruined Lord Meredith, and Pius Mulvey, a ruthless murderer. Their lives and fates are more connected than any of them know, creating a gripping story of revenge and forgiveness in this new piece of Irish theatre.

Moonfish Theatre’s production asks a number of timeless questions which not only straddle Irish history but are very pertinent to many other countries including the Ireland of today: what happens when a society is put under immense pressure? What are the ethical choices that face individuals at these moments in time? And what has been the Famine’s lasting effect on Irish culture, in particular, the Irish language and music?
Star of the Sea is a bilingual play that will be performed in Moonfish Theatre’s signature blend of Irish and English , the show will be accessible to audiences with little or no Irish. The show has been created for an adult audience, and is suitable for anyone over 16 years. This is a not-to-be-missed play, which runs as part of Galway Arts Festival 2014.
