The films selected for this programme are made by artists utilising the expansive form of the film essay to explore the relationship between the politics of art and cinema and political space and who invite us to ‘think through’ cinema with them. These films, from some of the most important and exciting artists working in film today, create new relationships between image, sound, form, thought and action, exposing the relationships between mass mediation and the circulation of images and data, the virtual and political borders of our world, the politics of acoustic and cinematic space, material and immaterial economies, and links between image technologies and war.

The Galway programme opens with a screening of PLASTIK Critical Forum Award, an inaugrural award for new work, the winner of which will be announced at PLASTIK Dublin 21 February 2015. A discussion with Laura Rascaroli (UCC) on her current research into the essay film will follow.

Three constellations of film programmes follow, including recent Turner Prize winner Duncan Campbell, Lawrence Abu Hamden, Rabih Mroué, Anja Kirschner & David Panos, Louis Henderson, The Museum of Non-Participation (Brad Butler & Karen Mirza) and finishing with a tribute to the work of the incredibly influential politically motivated artist and filmmaker Harun Farocki who recently passed away in 2014.

Megs Morley is an independent curator and artist. Currently she is the Curator in Residence for Galway city, developing a research and public programme entitled The Para Institution ( Other curatorial work includes Lines of Sight curated for the EVA International Biennale 2012, and the Tulca Contemporary Art Festival in 2011, entitled After the fall.

PLASTIK is an inaugural international festival of artists’ moving image. The first of its kind in Ireland it emerges from a collaboration between LUX Critical Forum Dublin (a meeting group for artists involved with the moving image), Temple Bar Gallery + Studios and the Irish Film Institute and is made possible through the generous support of the Arts Council and partnership with LUX. Galway partners include; Galway Film Centre, Galway Arts Centre, 126, Picture Palace, Para Institution, GMIT CCAM and the Huston School of Film & Digital Media.

Over three weekends in February, through a series of events taking place in Galway, Cork and Dublin, PLASTIK Festival of Artists’ Moving Image will create a new platform for considerations of both contemporary and historical approaches to this area of practice. In recent years there has been a significant increase of activity in this sphere, both here and abroad, and PLASTIK creates a site through which these changes can be considered, introducing audiences to a broad selection of works, many of which will be screening in Ireland for the first time. PLASTIK will also showcase a range of curatorial perspectives considering, through screenings and discussions, the role curatorial practice plays in the ways we understand and the role curatorial practice plays in the ways we understand and make sense of an ever expanding field.
