Walter Macken Centenary Celebrations

Curtha i láthair ag an Taibhdhearc, i gcomhair leis an Galway West End Community:

Comóradh Céad Bliain Uaitéar Uí Mhaicín

Rugadh Uaitéar Ó Maicín, duine de na scríbhneoirí ba cháiliúla i nGaillimh, 100 bliain ó mhí na Bealtaine seo. Beidh sraith imeachtaí á reáchtáil ag an Taibhdhearc, i gcomhair leis an Galway West End Community, chun an Comóradh Céad Bliain seo a cheiliúradh.
Cuirfear tús leis an gcomóradh le léacht de chuid Tom Kenny ar an 30 Aibreán agus ansin, beidh CÓISIR SRÁIDE á reáchtáil ar Ascaill Iósaif, an áit ar rugadh Walter féin, ar an Domhnach 3 Bealtaine ón 3-5pm.
Beidh sraith leachtaí, léitheoireachtaí agus scannáin sa Taibhdhearc freisin ón 12-15 Bealtaine.
Beidh mac Uaitéar, Ultan Macken, ar dhuine de na daoine a bheas léacht á tabhairt aige, i measc aíonna aige agus aisteoirí a bheas sleachta á léamh acu. Beidh an scannán do leanaí ‘Flight of the Doves’, a scríobh Uaitéar Ó Maicín, á thaispeáint do scoileanna ar an gCéadaoin, an 13 Bealtaine.
Ar an Aoine, an 15 Bealtaine, reáchtáilfear imeacht an-speisialta sa Taibhdhearc.
‘FROM STREET TO STAGE’, áit a dtiocfaidh an pobal áitiúil West End isteach sa Taibhdhearc, le radhairc ón gcóisir sráide agus táispeánfar scannán faisnéise don lá sin, áit a mbeidh an pobal áitiúil agus aisteoirí i láthair. Beidh an t-imeacht seo saor in aisce.

Ná caill an spraoi, le neart ceoil, léamha agus drámaíochta.

Eolas faoi Uaitéar Ó Maicín

Ba é Uaitéar Ó Maicín duine de na scríbhneoirí ba cháiliúla a bhí i nGaillimh riamh. Bhí an-tóir ar a chuid úrscéalta le linn a shaoil, ag tosú le ‘Rain on the Wind’ agus as sin, na leabhair, ‘the Scorching Wind’, ‘Seek the Fair Land’, agus ‘The Silent People’. Dhíol sé na milliúin cóipeanna dá shaothar ar fud an domhain.
D’oibrigh se sa Taibhdhearc mar Stiúrthóir Ealaíona ar feadh tréimhse idir 1939-1947. Scríobh agus d’aistrigh sé a lán drámaí agus stiúir sé iad freisin. Bhí an-tóir air mar aisteoir freisin agus ghlac sé róil in Amharclann na Mainistreach agus ar Broadway Mheiriceá. Is i Mionlach a raibh cónaí air agus thug sé faoin scríbhneoireacht ansin. Rinneadh scannán a bhí bunaithe ar an úrscéal a scríobh sé do pháistí, ‘Flight of the Doves’.

Walter Macken Centenary Celebrations

Walter Macken, one of Galway’s most famous writers, was born one hundred years ago this May. An Taibhdhearc theatre, in association with the Galway’s West End community, are presenting a series of events to celebrate his centenary.

Tom Kenny will kick it off with a talk in the Taibhdhearc on 30th April, followed by a STREET PARTY on St Joseph’s Avenue where Walter was born, on SUNDAY 3RD MAY from 3-5 PM.

There is also a series of lectures, readings and films in An Taibhdhearc from 12-15 May.
Walter’s son, Ultan Macken, will give talks in An Taibhdhearc along with other guest lecturers, readings and excerpts with actors. The film, ‘Flight of the Doves’, written by Walter Macken and made into film for children, will be shown for schools on WEDNESDAY 13th MAY.

And on Friday 15th May, a very special event will be held in An Taibhdhearc. ‘FROM STREET TO STAGE’, where the local West End community will come into the theatre with the scenes from the street party and a film documentary of that day will be shown, complete with local residents and actors. Admission will be free for this event.

About Walter Macken

WALTER MACKEN is one of Galway’s most famous writers, whose novels achieved great popularity in his lifetime, including ‘Rain on the Wind’ in 1950 and the trilogy, ‘Seek the Fair Land’, ‘The Scorching Wind’ and ‘ The Silent People’. His books sold several million copies in his lifetime.

He was also Artistic Director of An Taibhdhearc theatre in the 1940’s, (1939-1947), during which he spent time directing, designing and painting sets as well as producing plays which he both wrote and translated into Irish – in all, a total of 77 plays. He was also an actor and after An Taibhdhearc, trod the boards on the Abbey and on Broadway, before coming home to Menlo to write. Some of his novels were made into films, such as ‘Flight of the Doves’, and ‘Home is the Hero’.

FROM ST JOSEPH’S TO AN TAIBHDHEARC
The street party held on May 3rd to celebrate Walter Macken’s life comes in from St Joseph’s Avenue with readings, recreations and music. A film of the event will be shown on the night!Join us to give Walter a great night in the company of the residents of Galway’s West End.
